Bringing Mindfulness into the 11PlusSucceed Classroom

*Bringing Mindfulness into the 11PlusSucceed Classroom*

In today’s fast-paced academic environment, students of all ages face increasing pressure—from homework and exams to social dynamics and extracurricular demands. With this constant mental load, it’s no surprise that stress and anxiety levels among students are on the rise. One powerful tool that’s gaining attention in education is *mindfulness*—and its benefits for students are significant.

A few years ago, I was introduced to mindfulness not through a training course or conference, but through the parent of one of my students. She shared how simple breathing and awareness techniques were helping her child stay calmer and more focused. It was such a thoughtful insight that it stuck with me—and led me to explore how mindfulness could help other students as well.

Since then, I’ve slowly but steadily brought mindfulness practices into the 11PlusSucceed classroom. And the results? Genuinely encouraging.

### *What Is Mindfulness?*

Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present and engaged in the moment, without judgement. It encourages awareness of thoughts, feelings, and surroundings, helping students develop a sense of calm and focus even when facing challenges.

### *Why We Use Mindfulness at 11PlusSucceed*

Here’s what we’ve seen happen when we make space for mindfulness in our sessions:

#### 🌿 *Reduced Stress and Anxiety*

Before an exam paper or a tricky question, we might take a moment to do a simple *box breathing exercise*: inhale for four counts, hold for four, exhale for four, and hold again. It only takes a minute or two, but it calms nerves and helps students feel grounded.

#### 🧠 *Improved Focus*

Mindfulness helps students bring their wandering minds back to the task at hand. Even just a *one-minute meditation* between subjects or tasks can make a real difference in concentration—especially during revision blocks.

#### 💬 *Better Emotional Regulation*

When students feel frustrated, overwhelmed, or just “off,” we try to pause and notice what’s happening rather than push through. I’ve found that allowing room for these moments actually helps students bounce back faster and learn more effectively.

#### 🛌 *Better Sleep (and Happier Mornings!)*

Some students have told me they now use *mindful breathing* or *body scans* before bed—and they’re sleeping better as a result. Well-rested kids are simply more ready to learn.

### *The Power of Connection*

Alongside mindfulness, I’ve learned that really *connecting with students*—understanding what they enjoy, what stresses them out, and when they just need a break—makes a huge difference. Sometimes, that five-minute chat about their favourite sport or weekend plans gives me more insight than a whole worksheet ever could.

And when we give students permission to pause, reflect, and reset—it helps them build not only knowledge, but resilience and self-awareness too.

### *Simple Practices We Use*

Here are some quick mindfulness techniques we incorporate:

* *Box Breathing* to calm nerves before a test.

* *Body Scans* to wind down after a focused session.

* *Gratitude Journaling* (yes, even a quick “three good things” list!) to shift focus to positives.

* *Mindful Breaks*: Sometimes it’s just walking around, breathing, or even a quick chat—mindfulness doesn’t have to be silent or still.

### *Mindfulness Is a Skill for Life*

Mindfulness isn’t a magic fix, but it’s a valuable tool—especially for students preparing for high-stakes exams like the 11 Plus. It helps create a calm, connected, and supportive learning environment. And as someone who learned it from a parent’s perspective, I’m grateful to now be able to pass it on.
